Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent Share Their Ultimate Source of Creative Inspiration
These two HGTV hosts are inspired — just look at the spaces they design. Here, the duo dishes on who inspires them the most (and it's really, really touching).
All creatives draw inspiration from somewhere: travel, museums, music, nature. But Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent, designers and hosts of The Nate and Jeremiah Home Project, credit their mothers as the inspirational force behind their love of design.
“I actually know what inspired you ... can I say?” Nate asked Jeremiah during an interview for HGTV. “Jeremiah and his mother used to go to open houses all the time, and he would imagine what the space would be.”
“I wasn’t really inspired by travel or anything when I was younger, but when I would go into these homes and these houses that were open, and I would imagine how I would change things around, like, ‘Oh, I would put the kitchen there,’” Jeremiah recalled. “They would also have it staged, and I’d be like, ‘Oh, wow, they put a sofa there. That’s so interesting.’”
Jeremiah considers those moments from his youth formative. In fact, he's even taken to Instagram to share the sentiment that his mom is “the woman who taught me to find beauty in everything, everywhere.”
Nate also credits his mom with teaching him everything he knows about design. “My mom was an interior designer growing up so our whole house was filled with fabric samples and wallpaper books, and it was my job to carry them from her trunk into her office,” Nate remembered. “My mom was actually the first person that taught me that you don’t have to buy things new. She loved antiques malls and flea markets and estate sales and auctions, and I still do all of that stuff today.”
The storied and warm spaces they create certainly contain a little bit of each of their moms. Natural textures, vintage pieces and even some color — compliments of their daughter Poppy — play into all of their designs. (Both swear by buying vintage.)
Season 2 of The Nate and Jeremiah Home Project premieres February 22 at 9|8c on HGTV and discovery+. You can explore more of Nate and Jeremiah’s timeless designs by following them on Instagram at @nateberkus and at @jeremiahbrent.
