Custom bookcases bring in much-needed architectural detail and help anchor the seating area. Designer Vicki Bolick made a subtle color change on the mantel and interior of the bookcase, painting the areas a darker taupe to add definition and dimension.

The homeowners love the look of flowers, but don't like the maintenance routine that real plants require. Vicki worked around her "no-watering rule" with floral paintings and the spare use of low-maintenance plants.

The neutral and blue color palette unifies the space. Soft colors take away the starkness and bring out the vibrancy in the art.

Vicki offset the dark finish on the dining area furniture by using a glass-top table, light chairs and silver accessories.
