1910 Craftsman Pairs Classic Features With Modern Floor Plan

December 08, 2016

With an extensive collection of period-appropriate furniture, antiques and pottery, the owners of this 1910 Craftsman wanted to preserve the charm of their historic house while still enjoying a more open, modern layout. By removing walls, expanding the halls and introducing more wainscoting, IS Architecture breathed new life into the space.

Before: Faded Green, Outdated Exterior

Before the remodel, this beautiful Craftsman looked a lot like a diamond in the rough, with a faded green exterior and overgrown plants hiding the home from the street. Brick columns created a wall, but also made the home feel more closed off.

After: Dark Exterior With Detailed Lawn

Chocolate brown trim frames the forest green siding of this Craftsman home, creating a bold, woodsy color palette. A rock bed running parallel to the walkway gives the front yard an intriguing element and adds rough texture to the natural calm of the space.

Foyer Features Wood Staircase, Piano

Hardwood flooring leads to the wooden staircase, where the direction of the wood grain changes to guide the movement through the foyer space. Color blocking with sea green and white paneling adds subtle color to the design, while a wood piano and stained glass lamp further the inviting aesthetic.

Living Room With Rich, Warm Colors

In this traditional living room, red curtains frame the French doors to soften the natural light flowing in from outside. A wood entertainment center and leather bench complement the decorative wood fireplace, while a plush white sofa creates a striking visual contrast.
