A new landscape design changes this sloping back yard from a liability into a one-of-a-kind asset. Once difficult to navigate and tough to plant, the slope is re-invented with curved stone stairs, a shade garden, and a unique rock grotto and bog garden.
Steve Watson from HGTV's "Don't Sweat It" shows how you can give your porch charm and character by hanging a porch swing. It's an easy project, and you'll need a tape measure, level, drill, bits, a socket set, and of course the swing itself. First, find the ceiling joists. You may need to add extra joists for more support. If you have regular ceiling joists, use a screw eye bolt; for flat joists, use a through bolt. Pre-drill holes into the joists, making sure the spacing matches that of your swing chains. Next, hang the chains and assemble your swing. Finally, hang the swing, making sure that it's level.
For a classic bungalow-style home, low maintenance landscaping transforms a neglected yard dominated by shade and lots of weeds. Instant curb appeal is added with new perennial gardens, seasonal color and a new stone walkway.
