Red Buckeye

(Aesculus pavia)

USDA Zones: 4 to 8
Plant type: deciduous tree

The red buckeye (Aesculus pavia) is a small, round-topped tree or large shrub with large, dark green, compound leaves, arranged like fingers. In mid-spring, long panicles of red flowers emerge. Leaves emerge early in spring and drop in early fall. Average mature size in the landscape is 10 to 20 feet with equal or greater width.

Give the red buckeye a moist, well-drained site in, if possible, part shade. Flowering is good in significant shade, but if too dark, the plant develops an open habit; if placed in full sun, foliage may drop a little earlier.
