A Colonial Revival With Historic Charm

Location: South Bend, IN

Built in: 1927

Size: 3,850 sq. ft.

Paint colors: (house) Daydream, (shutters) Blue Danube, (trim) Stone White and (door) Heritage Red, Benjamin Moore

"We were drawn to the dormers and copper gutters of this Colonial Revival house," say homeowners Noah and Eileen Davey. "We also love the original slate roof; the exterior paint colors bring out its shades of red and blue."

Rounded dormers look more subtle than standard angled ones, but a trio of window boxes help to draw attention to this detail. Bacopa, a trailing plant, spills out of containers (in a good way!), while carnations create a pop of color. Adding to the charm is the expansive brick patio. Fun fact: Many of the bricks were originally used to pave streets in the area.

A White House With Stunning Window Boxes

Location: Mount Dora, FL

Built in: 1912

Size: 1,300 sq. ft.

Paint colors: (house) White Dove and (door) Blue Rapids, Benjamin Moore

To give a bit more dimension to the front of this house, homeowner Kay Volmar filled her window boxes to the brim with red and white flowers. Red planters filled with hydrangeas, Eugenia topiaries and a hanging fern make the porch feel just as lush. The cobblstone walkway — inpsired by her Northeastern roots — was hand-laid by Kay. "A woman recently told me she loves driving down my street because my house brings her joy," she says.

A Texas Home With a Unique Blue Roof

Location: Dallas, TX

Built in: 1926

Size: 2,800 sq. ft.

Paint colors: (house) Gosling, (shutters and shingles) try Blue Sentinel and (front door) Red Vitality by Pratt & Lambert for a similar look

The multi-paned windows, framed by blue louvered shutters, are one of Donna and Mark Herbener's favorite things about their Dallas home's exterior. After years painted an ordinary off-white, the door got a coat of rich red that pairs well with the blue shutters and shingles and ups the charm. The terra-cotta pots on and around the steps burst with cheerful red geraniums that match the door.
