Materials Needed

  • large tin can
  • cork sheets
  • permanent marker
  • craft knife and cutting board
  • floor adhesive
  • disposable brush or plastic gloves
  • duct tape
  • adhesive veneer trim
  • iron
  • scissors
  • plant
  • soil
  • gravel or other drainage material

Cut Cork

Measure the distance between the top and bottom rims of the can. Using cork sheeting that is at least 1/4-inch thick, cut a strip out of the cork using a straight edge and craft knife to fit between the two rims (Image 1). Since cork is somewhat delicate, it's better to make several, gradually deeper cuts than to try to cut the material in just a couple of passes. Next, wrap the strip of cork around the can snugly and mark at the top and bottom where the sheet overlaps (Image 2). Draw a straight line between these two points and cut again.

Attach Cork

Liberally apply floor adhesive to the outside of the can with a brush or rub it on with plastic gloves. Wrap the cork strip around the can snugly. Next, secure the cork by wrapping it with duct tape. Pull the ends of the cork as tightly together as possible. Immediately use a damp paper towel to wipe away any excess adhesive that may have gotten on the cork or the rim of the can. Lay the planter on its side on a flat surface with the cork seam side down. Fill the inside with something heavy such as small weights or a bag of sand. Let the planter rest for at least 24 hours to form a tight bond between the cork and the metal. After 24 hours, carefully peel away the tape.

Add Trim

Use a strip of adhesive veneer trim to cover the cork seam. Hold the strip in place perpendicular to the bottom of the can and apply steady heat and pressure with an iron. Let the adhesive cool and set for a few minutes then cut away the excess with scissors.

Decorate

Use the planter as is, apply stain to the cork or customize with paint and different patterns. To give this charming planter as a Mother’s Day gift, fill the planter with gravel or other drainage material, soil and a plant. Attach a fun photo or note to the front with a push pin and include a card just for mom.
