Ingredients

  • frosted vanilla cupcakes (store-bought or homemade)
  • store-bought key lime pie filling
  • good quality silver tequila
  • coarse salt
  • gummy worms (not the organic variety)
  • lime
  • apple corer

Instructions

1: Place gummy worms in a small glass container and cover with enough tequila so they are completely submerged. Cover container with plastic wrap or a lid and set aside for 4 hours to allow the worms to get drunk. As they absorb the alcohol, they'll also grow a bit in size. Tip: Both gummy worms and tequila are shelf stable so it's not necessary to refrigerate the worms for this step; refrigeration will only slow down their absorption of the alcohol.

2: Scoop a small amount of the premade key lime pie filling into a bowl. Stir in a splash (or two) of tequila and the juice from a fresh lime wedge to give the filling a boozy, margarita-flavor twist. Note: You can reuse the leftover tequila from the tipsy worms or add fresh tequila.

3: Insert the apple corer halfway into the cupcake, twist, then pull out the cupcake plug (Image 1). Spoon the boozy filling into the cupcake (Image 2). Tip: Be careful not to punch all the way through the cupcake as this will cause the filling to leak out.

4: Thin the remaining boozy pie filling with more lime juice and water (or another splash of tequila), then drizzle over the top of the cupcake. Insert a drunken worm into the cupcake’s filled center and garnish with a fresh lime wedge and a light sprinkling of coarse salt.
