This grand country house is in New Jersey, but its ages-old feel would be equally at home in the provinces of France.

This bedroom's design aims to blend masculine and feminine elements with a dark ceiling balanced by blush pink walls. To keep its large size from feeling overwhelming, the designer broke the space up into smaller areas: ones for sleeping, sitting and getting dressed.

Low walls with angles gave designers very limited use of wall space, but they used the opportunity to get inventive. Here, they let the upholstered headboard extend up and follow the room's curve, turning the bed into a strong, visual focal point.

Darks and lights are woven together all around the room, a move the designer made to blend masculine and feminine energies. Hand-painted Fromental wallpaper creates drama in the space.
