Knowing how much you can spend on your closet really helps the planning process and nails down what resources you will be able to utilize. Without a budget in mind, you can't properly create a workable storage solution for your particular closet.

Do-It-Yourself

There are now many kinds of storage systems available at a wide variety of price points. The cost for a do-it-yourself system varies, starting at under $150 for a very basic set-up to more than $600 for a system with customizable features. You will find that the vinyl-coated wire systems are generally cheaper than solid alternatives with a wood veneer or painted finish.

If you have a small, basic closet and feel handy with a carpenter's level, cordless drill and tape measure, the do-it-yourself systems can be a wonderful and affordable option. But always make sure to follow all the directions carefully and use the tools suggested by the manufacturer. Also keep the company's customer service phone number handy in case problems arise, and take advantage of online instructional videos that many manufacturers now offer.

Pro-Installed

If you don't feel so handy with tools and have the budget, you can get a closet storage system professionally installed. An average pro-installed walk-in closet costs about $1,200 to $3,000 or more for materials and installation, but their expertise and experience can help you avoid costly mistakes in the long run.

The total cost really depends on the size of your closet and the type of system you choose. Going for a basic system with hangers and shelves will generally cost you less than more elaborate systems with extras like cabinets and drawers.

There are some basic pro-installed closet systems that can cost under $1,000 but there are some extremely high-end walk-in closet projects with all the bells and whistles that can cost more than $50,000. To avoid sticker shock, do some research on the kind of system that appeals to you and feels like the best fit for your home.

Professional Organizers

If the clutter in your closet is so overwhelming you can't even think about the storage system itself, you might want to hire a professional organizer. From about $50 to $150 an hour, these clutter-control experts can help you eliminate the items you no longer need and organize what you want to keep in your closet. Some can also design your closet and make recommendations on local closet experts, installation and products.
