The romance continues outside with an elegantly-set table, beautiful flowers and a crackling fire.
Eileen Paulin, associate publisher and editor of Romantic Homes magazine, says that the shabby chic look of yesterday, with its heavily-distressed furnishings and faded fabrics, is being replaced with a more polished, refined version. Romantic is the word that comes to mind, especially in Karen Mayo's home, where a neutral color palette and architectural salvage pieces combine for an elegant and ethereal design.
  • Even though the home looks "all-white," Mayo says she has used over 30 neutral shades, from soft celadon to a muted lavender.
  • Large-scale architectural pieces are the foundation of the dramatic romantic look. Columns are used to anchor the living room seating area, hinged doors are used as a divider screen and an armoire (so large it had to be brought in the home in seven pieces!) provides space for the TV and other electronics.
  • The same fabric has been used for slipcovers on every piece of furniture, which helps the look flow seamlessly from room to room.
  • The kitchen and dining room exude an ornate Italian style from the limestone floor and countertop and relief pattern on the backsplash tiles in the kitchen to the layered fabrics draping the dining room table.
  • The master bedroom features white-washed furniture, architectural accessories and a Victorian-style floral rug that adds a hint of color. Textures abound on the bed, from the damask and beaded pillows to the silk and velvet throws. Elegance is also evident in the bathroom--Mayo placed a chandelier above the tub, mixed Italian tile with limestone and used old ceiling tin to frame the vanity mirror.
  • A lush garden area, complete with a fireplace, provides space for dining alfresco.
